Based on Service note
Procedure for the proper way to shutdown the ERBTEC High Field
RF AMP Subsystem Prior to repair or adjustment.
Erbtec power down preparation:
- Remove the screws necessary to withdraw the amplifier unit from the cabinet
enclosure.
- Attach a Laptop or other terminal to the serial port using the serial cable
that comes with the amp and command the amplifier to the "off" mode.
With a Laptop running Windows 95/98:
- From Start Button select "Find", select Files or Folders.
- Enter the words and symbols *terminal* in the "Named"
dialog box and select Find Now
- In the list that appears select "Terminal.exe"
- When the Terminal window appears select Settings and
Communications.
- Under communications insure the following Setup:
- Baud rate 9600
- Data bits 8
- Stop bits 1
- Parity none
- Flow Control Xon/Xoff
- Attach cable connector to com port you are using ( With service
laptop this should be com2. Com1 is used either by your
external mouse or the modem card)
Troubleshooting:
If you can’t get control of the amp:
- Make sure you have the right type of serial cable attached. Two CPU's
attached to one another require a NULL modem cable (Xmit/Rcv lines are
crossed)
- Make sure you have an active com port. (switch to the other port)
- Try 7 data bits 1 parity and 1 stop bit. (Older terminals/Laptops only)
Command the RF amp to the OFF STATE:
- Command the Erbtec Microprocessor controller to internal control by
typing: O0 ( That's the letter "O" and a zero) in the
Terminal window. This will disconnect the amp from external computer
control.
- Turn OFF the Erbtec amp breaker at the rear of the cabinet.
- Perform LOTTO procedures at the Main disconnect and remove and lock the
incoming AC power cord in the cup.
CAUTION
USE EXTREME CAUTION IN THE NEXT STEP. THERE STILL MAY BE
HAZARDOUS VOLTAGES PRESENT!
- WAIT at least 10 minutes
to insure the HV capacitors have bled
down to ground potential.
WARNING:
NEVER SHORT THE POWER SUPPLY TO GROUND. DOING SO MAY RESULT
IN A DESTROYED POWER SUPPLY AND OR SEVER SHOCK HAZARD.
- Remove the respective covers and connect the negative lead of a DVM to the
chassis and measure potential hazard points in the areas you will be putting
your hands. At each point you should measure ZERO volts. If you measure a
potential anywhere above 20 volts STOP. Something is not powered off
correctly OR HAS NOT BLED DOWN YET. Proceed ONLY when measured potentials
are below 20 volts.
- Attach a ground wire to the amp frame first, and the other end of the
ground wire to each power supply. This would require you to have TWO ground
wires. One for the 3kv supply and one for the 6kv supply. These do not have
to be large gauge wire. #14 will do.
DONE!
The Erbtec amplifier should now be safe to work on. Remember
your ESD procedures if removing any of the TTL logic boards within the cabinet.
To Re-enable the Erbtec RF amp:
- Remove any ground wires you may have attached.
- Replace all covers.
- Turn on the circuit breaker for the RF amplifier. (remove LOTO equipment).
- Reconnect you laptop and once again enter the terminal program.
- Command the Erbtec Microprocessor controller to internal control by typing: O1
( That's the letter "O" and the number one) followed by O3
(That's the letter "O" and the number three) in the Terminal window.
This will disconnect the amp from external computer control.
